Boris The Beast

I’d like introduce my expedition vehicle for 2013 ‘Boris the Beast’.

After a search of over 10 months, with hours spent researching on the internet, and including the purchase and sale of another Landcruiser, I am confident I’ve finally found the right vehicle. Boris is a 1994 Toyota Landcruiser 80 series 4.2l turbo diesel.

Boris already has a 2 year trip around Africa under his belt. He was used by Peter and Liz as their home, while they drove around Africa during 2008-2010. Peter being a retired Army man was prepared to a high standard, probably too high in his words. Better to be prepared for everything was his motto. You can see Boris’ previous adventures on Peter and Liz’s website ( and learn a little about Boris himself here.

Therefore I have inherited a vehicle with a fantastic list of accessories. Here are a few:

  • Patriot roof rack
  • Extra fuel tank
  • Water tank
  • Marine water filter
  • Outside shower system
  • Compressor
  • 12v split power system
  • 240v inverter power system
  • Fridge
  • Winch
  • Rear storage system
  • A range of tools and spares

Boris was the first vehicle prepared for an overland expedition by one of the recognised experts in the field of Toyota Landcruiser preparation, Julian Voelcker at Overland Cruisers. Overall I’m pretty fortunate to have Boris as a large amount of preparation has already been completed.

From here Boris needs an expedition level service and a range of upgraded parts to get him ship shape. All going to plan I’ll have Boris prepped and ready for some small test adventures in the middle of January.

There are exciting times ahead as a major part of the plan is now in place.
