Stu and his pack raft 'The Mekong Queen' on testing day

Stu and his pack raft ‘The Mekong Queen’ on testing day
(Luang Namtha, Laos)

While I was in Luang Namtha, Laos I had the pleasure of meeting a fellow Kiwi called Stuart Biggs. Stu and I discovered we were both fans of the adventurer Alastair Humphreys. Stu was so impressed he had taken a leaf out of Alastair’s book and decided to go on a pack rafting adventure.

What I loved about Stu was the simplicity of his decision making.  As far as I could tell his decision making process had gone like this. Stu liked the look of an Alpacka Pack raft, so he decided to buy one. He figured pack rafting down the Mekong River looked like a good idea, so he would just do it!! He’d take the pack raft for a test session, and all going well he’d head off. He had the time, and had just decided to do it. It was a simple as that.

We took the pack raft for a training session on the Namtha river. Stu survived, the survived. He was ready to go. So two days later I gave him a lift with his Alpacka pack raft that he’d aptly named ‘The Mekong Queen’ back to the Namtha river. All going well he would head south-west along the Namtha to where it meets the Mekong River near Huay Xai. From there he would paddle the length of the Mekong south through Cambodia, into Vietnam and finally, two months later he would reach the sea. He had a tent for sleeping, and a raft for transport. It was brilliantly simple, and yet an incredibly brave and exciting adventure. I was envious.

Farewell Stu. Good luck!! (Luang Namtha, Laos)
